General Information

The most common question posed by parents during interviews is usually “What can I do to encourage and support my child better with their Japanese study?” The information below should help answer this question. The Japanese program at Southern Cross Catholic College is an innovative program allowing students to study the content of the course at their own pace through an interactive online environment. All course content can be accessed by students at any time and anywhere by visiting www.scccjapan.com. Course content is located under the Blackboard section.

Japan Tour

The next Japan Tour will be held in 2017. Please check the Japan Tour page for updates on the planning for this tour. The tour usually costs around $3000 – $4000 for a 2-week tour. This includes all costs associated with the tour including spending money.

The tour is only open to those students enrolled in the Japanese program from Years 9-12 and it is expected that students be achieving at least a Sound level (C) of achievement in order to participate. Families must also be up-to-date with school fees in order for their student to participate.

iPads and Apps

In class, students use an iPad or laptop to access the website and independently work through the activities listed. Given the diverse range of student needs and abilities, this method allows students who may be struggling to move at a slower pace while those who feel more confident are able to continue ahead. This system also allows for close monitoring of individual student progress through the marking of completed workbook activities, ensuring students grasp important concepts before moving on to the next section of the course. It also allows for one-on-one time with students who need extra help.Having the iPads as a learning tool in the classroom also gives students the ability to learn through having fun. There are a number of very engaging Apps available for students to use and so far they have proven to be very popular. If you wish to learn more about the Apps available for download, please visit the Apps page of the website.

YouTube

The Japanese department at Southern Cross Catholic College now also has a dedicated YouTube Channel called “JapTutes“, with the same content featured on iTunes U (see above).Check out the channel here and don’t forget to like and subscribe! 🙂

Language Perfect

Language Perfect, simply put, is the world’s largest online languages competition. Students can select from a range of languages on offer and compete against their friends, classmates, year group and even the world using their language skills! And all with just the click of a button. So far the app has proven extremely popular with students at SCCC and encouraged a healthy amount of competitive spirit among our budding linguists!

The app is free to download on all Apple devices or students can head over to languageperfect.com and log in with their details to play online.

Subscription to the app is currently funded by the College at $30 per student, so please ensure your child gets the most out of this fantastic resource by playing regularly.

When does Japanese become an elective?

Another common question posed by parents is in relation to the elective years of the program. Currently students are required to undertake Japanese study during Year 6 and Year 7 at Southern Cross. From Year 8 onwards the program becomes an elective.I do make an effort to advise parents of the benefits of second language study and encourage both students and parents to think carefully about their options.

It is not commonly known but students who graduate Year 12 with a foreign language have an advantage over those who don’t when it comes to the calculation of University placements. It’s called the “Bonus Rank Scheme“. Even if your child is only in Year 7, and University feels like a lifetime away, it is still something that needs to be considered now, as students need to complete the junior years of the program before they can move on to the senior years – Japanese is not a subject that can be easily resumed in Year 11. More information about the Bonus Rank Scheme can be found here.

Student Workbooks

All students enrolled in the Japanese program at Southern Cross are expected to own a copy of the Obento Deluxe (Yr 7-8), Obento Supreme (Yr 9-10) or Mirai 5 (Yr 11) and Mirai 6 (Yr 12) workbook. The workbook contains all the activities students are required to complete during the course of their study. The Obento Deluxe workbook will be used over two years so there is no need to purchase a new workbook at the start of each year. Likewise for the Obento Supreme workbook which will be used over two years. Please keep these workbooks in a safe place at the end of each year ready for use again in the following school year. Students who still don’t own a copy of the workbook can purchase a copy online.
